....Find
1Find a book
From the main search on The Knowledge Netwrok, use the Library area to search for books. You can search for books by title, author and keyword.
Books are available both electronically and in print. A list of eBooks by supplier is now available.
Clicking on the title of an eBook will take you to the supplier website.
To access the full-text of a book you will need to login with your Athens username and password so look for an Athens Login link and click it. If you are already logged into The Knowledge Network, your Athens details will be passed through automatically to the supplier website and you’ll be given access to the requested book.
If there is no electronic full-text version of the book available you may be able to request the book from the libraries which hold print copies.
If you have a Shelcat library card, you may request the book from an associated library by clicking the Submit an article/book request form via Shelcat (log-in required) link and completing the electronic form which displays on the following page.
If you do not have a Shelcat library card, you may request the book from a library which is not linked to Shelcat. Select the Not a shelcat member? link and select the library from which you’d like to borrow the book and complete and submit the online Document Delivery Request Form.
2Find a database
Databases can be accessed from the Library tab on The Knowledge homepage. You can browse an A to Z list of databases or quickly link to popular collections.
Bibliographic databases are online collections of published literature including journal articles, conference proceedings, medicines information, books and standards.
NHS Scotland subscribes to a wide range of bibliographic databases aimed at all staff groups within the NHS and much of this content is available from The Knowledge Network search.
Bibliographic databases provides access to a lot more detailed options for literature searching, including combining and limiting searches, saving searches and setting up alerts to favourite searches.
The What is here for me? widget (or feature-box) also stores links to core resources such as databases, journals, portals relating to your role and interests.
3Find a journal
From the main search on The Knowledge Netwrok, use the Library area to search for journals. There are two ways to find a journal.
You can type a word from the journal title into the Search box or use the A-Z journal finder.
Journals are available both electronically and in print. A current A to Z listing of electronic journals is now available.
Type a word or words into the search box. When the journal record displays, you can see details of the available holdings of that title by clicking the Show link beside the Holdings heading.
Clicking the More link reveals the full catalogue record of the journal.
Clicking on the title of the journal will take you to the supplier website. In some instances there may be more than one supplier of the journal and you can select your preferred option from an overlay box that appears on your screen.
To access the full-text of a journal article you will need to login with your Athens username and password so look for an Athens Login link and click it. If you are already logged into the The Knowledge Network, your Athens details will be passed through automatically to the supplier website and you’ll be given access to the requested journal. Use this guide for more detailed information on how to access a journal (or article) from each of the suppliers that support Athens authentication through The Knowledge Network.
A small selection of titles require a publisher username and password or are available only on the NHS network via IP. Contact knowledge@nes.scot.nhs.uk for details.
Select the year, volume and issue you wish to see by clicking the link on the supplier page.
4Find a journal article
From the main search on The Knowledge Netwrok, use the Library area to search for an article.
You may have heard or read something about an article on a specific subject and would like to read it in full.
If you are not sure of the complete title of the article, use the keywords box.
Type a word or words relevant to the article title or subject, into the keyword box together with any other relevant details (e.g. the year of pubication).
Click the Search button.
Clicking on the title of the article will take you to the supplier website. In some instances there may be more than one supplier of the journal and you can select your preferred option.
What happens next depends on the supplier of the article.
If the article is supplied free, you should be able to access it immediately
If the article is provided through a subscription, you may be asked to login to the supplier’s website.
In this case :
look for an Athens login link somewhere on the page ;
click the link to pass your authentication details from the The Knowledge Network to the supplier (providing you have logged in to the The Knowledge Network) ;
details of the article and the formats offered may be displayed ;
select your preferred format to retrieve and display the full-text article (articles are usually available either in PDF or HTML formats).
Use this guide for more detailed information on how to access a journal (or article) from each of the suppliers that support Athens authentication through The Knowledge Network.
Some articles require a publisher username and password or are available only on the NHS network via IP. Contact knowledge@nes.scot.nhs.uk for details.
If there is no electronic full-text version of a journal article available you may be able to request it from the libraries which hold copies.
If you have a Shelcat library card, you may request the article from an associated library by clicking the Submit an article/book request form via Shelcat (log-in required) link and completing the electronic form which displays on the following page.
If you do not have a Shelcat library card, you may request the article from a library which is not linked to Shelcat. Select the Not a shelcat member? and select the library from which you’d like to borrow the book and complete and submit the online Document Delivery Request Form.
5Request a journal article
If full-text journal articles are not available on The Knowledge Network, you can submit an Inter-Library Loan request (sometimes shortened to ILL) to the library service of which you are a member. Your library will then attempt to source it on your behalf, and inform you if they have been successful.
Please note that Inter-Library Loan policies are defined by library services, and the level of service you are entitled to will depend on the library of which you are a member. For example, some libraries will source articles from the British Library (sometimes at a cost) and others will not.
When searching for an article, The Knowledge Network displays a menu offering various next-step options if there is no full text available online. These steps will be different depending on whether you are a member of a Shelcat library or not — Shelcat libraries are listed at the bottom of this page.

You may belong to a library which is not on the Shelcat system (e.g. NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde) or in Higher Education.
